In the far distance one can get a glimpse of the powerful rapids where the
river falls about 14 feet in a short distance. On the right at the base of the
rapids is a huge boulder, which we call Falls Overlook. One can only imagine
what it was like before 1773, when the dam downstream was built.

     In those days the smooth surface we see today was 9 feet lower. There was
a waterfall just to the left of Falls Overlook, christened the Narrow Falls of the
Appomattox by the first explorers, who also found a major Indian here.
